Basic Dental Hygiene Tips for Beginners

Cosmetic dentist in beverly hills

There is a lot of information out there concerning dental care. But implementing proper dental hygiene is a whole new ballgame. Bad dental habits can cause you to need a dentist due to the severe health effects it can cause. Here are some general dental care tips that will promote healthy dental hygiene, and will only cause you to need a dentist for your bi-annual checkups.

Change your toothbrush often

Your toothbrush works hard, and requires consistent changing in order for it to work effectively. This means getting a new toothbrush every three months or so, and always remembering to change it after you recover from a sickness.

Brush properly

Now that you have a good toothbrush in hand, it is important to brush properly. Hold your brush at a 45 degree angle and then massage each tooth with the bristles. Do not simply go over the top of teeth, but make sure to thoroughly get all four sides of the tooth.

Floss before you brush

Flossing around each tooth before you brush will remove plaque from hard to reach areas so your toothpaste will be able to clean your entire mouth. Floss at least once a day, and it is always great to floss after eating stringy foods such as corn on the cob or steak so the small particles do not get lodged in hard to reach areas.

Avoid acidic foods

Acid is bad for your teeth because it can eat away at the enamel which protects the pulp of your tooth. Acid erosion may cause you to visit a cosmetic dentist as acid erosion can turn your teeth yellow, brown, or even black. Some acid-rich drinks include orange juice, coffee, and soft drinks.

Don’t forget your mouthwash

Some patients believe that flossing and brushing is all you need for proper dental hygiene. This is untrue as mouthwash is able to clean your entire mouth including your gums and tongue. Follow every brushing with a couple teaspoons of mouthwash swished in your mouth for at least 30 seconds and you will have pearly whites that shine.

Take vitamins

It is important to remember that your teeth are actually bones so they need calcium to thrive. Eating calcium enriched foods are great for optimal tooth health.

Just follow these tips and you will be able to show off those pearly whites! Need a dentist? Keep your smile bright with Beverly Hills dental care.
