Emergency Dental Care Can Save Your Bacon

Updated: 2/9/2022

When you are trying to take better care of your teeth, there are a number of things that you need to be doing in your healthy teeth routine. You need to regularly get dental care services so that you get a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums twice a year. Engaging in healthy oral hygiene is highly important to your overall health. If you get too much bacteria growth in your mouth, that bacteria can travel to other parts of your body and cause health problems.

It’s important to use the healthy dental products that your dentist recommends. Using a good toothbrush that is replaced regularly is often the key to a healthier smile. When you need help with your teeth, be sure to ask your dentist questions about the care of your teeth and how you can improve them.

A good routine is often to brush two or three times a day and to floss often. Your dentist may also recommend mouthwash for you to help fight the germs in your mouth. This can have some health benefits that go beyond the mouth. It’s all about fighting against the plaque and bacteria that can grow in your mouth.

Emergency dental office

I was on a business trip in the Philadelphia area. As a corporate trainer, I would be teaching class at a major bank in Center City the next day. I had just gotten to a nice small hotel in the suburbs and went out for some dinner.

Halfway through a very nice steak, my bridgework, which is in three upper sections, broke. Two thirds of my upper teeth were disconnected and threatened to pull loose out of my mouth. I’ve never felt such a sinking feeling in my professional life. How was I going to speak the next day?

I needed some emergency dental care, and fast. It was already 6:30 p.m., and I didn’t know whether to head 600 miles home, call the company and cancel my class for at least the morning session, or do what? I started dialing the phone and by pure luck, got ahold of my dentist back home, who called a friend, a dentist in the next town over, a guy who met me at 8 p.m. to fix my bridgework. He and I walked into a dark office, turning on lights as we went. In half an hour, I was back together. And the guy didn’t charge me an arm and a leg.

Saying I was grateful falls well beneath the level of thankfulness I had. I was relieved beyond words.

That was almost 30 years ago. Today, finding emergency dental care is a lot easier.

First, with certain credit cards, you have an emergency, away from home medical service that can refer you to a local emergency dental office close to where you’re staying. Many group healthcare and dental insurance providers have emergency dentist listings. You may have to go through a couple of 800 numbers to find somebody close, but finding emergency dentists can be done.

Then there’s the internet, which is loaded with emergency dental care listings, by city and locale, and nationwide. Emergency dental care may be just a couple of clicks away.

Look, when you need emergency dental care because of a bad tooth, dental hardware problems like I had, or a sudden abscess, the professional emergency care dental provider who sees you on short notice can be the difference between comfort and discomfort, and the success or failure of a business trip.
